Donations

It looks like our problems aren't going to solve themselves, and it's entirely out of our control.
The only option left is to get a new, better host.
As you may or may not know, we haven't received any donations in over a year so we don't have a dime left.
If everyone chips in, we're certain we can get the site up and running on a new host shortly.

You can donate either via Moneybookers or PayPal.
Don't forget to include your nickname somehow if you want to receive the donor icon next to your nickname when the site goes back up.

Please help out of you can. The site's future is in your hands.

Update: It has come to our attention that some users are doubting the authenticity of this blog.
We have however been using it on and off for years, whenever the site was inaccessible.
This exact text was also posted on the news page right before the DNS change.
Maybe we were too hasty to change the DNS before everyone had seen the news, we apologize for that.
But the majority of people couldn't reach SceneHD at all, so we needed to get the message out there for everyone.
If you need further proof, join IRC and check the topic there. We have removed the channel key (password) so that everyone can join.
Or contact any Staff member on other sites if you know any of us there.

Update2: We have ordered a new dedicated server and will begin configuring it as soon as possible.
There's currently no ETA as we are not sure how long it takes for our order to get confirmed.
Then we have to configure the server which could take a while. But we're getting there!
On another note, we will now have a monthly cost for the server so keep the donations coming if you are able to.
Also a big thanks to everyone who have donated and made this possible!

@Meh

Guess you were one of few who managed to donate during our short trial of Moneybookers. We never got around to implementing it on donate.php though and it was quickly forgotten. Only a handful donated through that.

If you donated through PayPal during that time, you were scammed.

How do I know you're the real schenehd people and the site hasn't been hijacked?

The reason I'm asking is I haven't seen any "problems [that] aren't going to solve themselves" mentioned on the site. Perhaps I missed it?

2010-10-03 @ 06:30:10

I wonder the same thing as "someone",

I would LOVE to help out, as SceneHD is my favorite torrent-site.

But HOW do I know it's the real SceneHD? I haven't seen any "help we're going broke" on the site-news.

2010-10-03 @ 08:10:03
Posted by: id0l

Not to second-guess any of the site admins/mods intentionally, but I am going to have to agree with the above posters. Since I have not seen any mention of aforementioned "problems" regarding the sites host, monetary issues, or anything of the sort - I have to wonder if this is real or not.

2010-10-03 @ 08:14:35
Posted by: id0l

Also, in the years that I have been a [in good standing] member here, I have not once seen the admins basically issue a statement saying that we must donate to get the site back up and running. Very strange indeed again considering the fact that I was on SHD earlier and there wasn't any news about host/monetary issues regarding keeping the site online...

The recent problem was real, the tracker was not reachable by most data centers that routed via bahnhof.net/.se, which meant that most seedboxes where not usable anymore, and even most off the staff could not even reach the suite any more. There was an extensive forum thread an an announcement on the site, so if you missed it, you most likely always only went directly to the browse page.

A call for donation may be justified if a new host has to be found and paid for.

What would you call a reasonable donation? 5 Euro? 10 Euro?

How was the site financed in the past? Wouldn't it be better, to first bring the site back, and then call for donations? Because nobody will donate, if it isn't even sure, if the site is coming back, and where the money goes to, especially what happens with the money, if the site does not return.

This sounds fake as hell to me. This is not how SceneHD staff deals with problems. Can somebody confirm the story on IRC?

Well, since SHD was the best HD-torrent-site out there, I will keep my cool and not do anything at all until the real site is back and running.

2010-10-03 @ 10:59:12

I can confirm the problems the site had in the last days.

I, like many others, was unable to connect to the tracker using a seedbox (which apparently makes up the majority of the traffic).

As for the donations request, wasn't PayPal unusable on this site?

$ host scenehd.org

scenehd.org has address 98.124.198.1

That address is in the U.S. and redirects to this blog, which is in Sweden. I also can confirm, that this blog has been used by stuff before during downtimes, so it is genuine.

I really hope, SceneHD will come back.

are you guys sane? partially blind or mentally unstable?

scenehd.org has been having grand hosting issues the whole week due to some major hardware failure on the network that belongs to its ISP - DCP networks. Many peering partners through which traffic was usually routed for the most part of the world - lost connectivity and this has resulted in a significant impact on reaching the site for the vast ammount of its userbase (aswell as many members of the staff). A very large quantity of noticeably big networking companies (i.e. OVH, Leaseweb, Netdirekt - which provide dedicated hosting for popular "seedboxes") were NOT able to reach the site/tracker in any way due to this problem - only a small number of selected ISPs were lucky enough not to have their routing disrupted and could still access the site/tracker through 'Cogent'. All other users were literally "cut off" and had no idea what was going on, unless they could get the information from a person/place (i.e. IRC) that actually had it. There has been A LOT of talk on scenehd's IRC network which WAS reachable for everyone, because it had cross-hosting (fail-proof) on 2 different networks (DCP/PatrikWeb). So, basically, almost everyone active within scenehd's community KNEW what scenehd was going through this whole time. There has been many threads/topics on the forum regarding the trouble of reaching the site or getting/supplying the content due to the downtime symptoms described above - there has also been AN OFFICIAL statement posted in the news section (on the FRONT page of the site, as well if you were just browsing the content - NEWS should've been highlighted red - which is a good sensitive indicator, well i certainly always failed to miss it, since the site's color scheme is completely different), as well as official staff replies posted throughout those threads that started with the talks of trouble of operation. The overall count of peers, as well as the count of content has been SHRUNK dramatically, so it was quite HARD not to notice that something was going on AKA that something was out of ordinary. I think it is now clear, why i started writing this post with that special undertone in the very start, right? Where HAVE you been, that you now start to question the most obvious facts? Seems like many of the above posters simply got taken away by alien lifeforms to another planet, since they completely lack any bits of information for the past 7 days.

@Temp nick:

IRC chatlog from half an hour ago:

[12:45] * randy changes topic to 'Tracker: FEW WORKING ROUTERS TO SITE ATM!! Bots: Offline | Staff: Comapatients | #scenehd.announce PW | #scenehd.swe | #scenehd.help | #scenehd.pre | #scenehd.hdpre | #scenehd.xxxpre | #scenehd.poker | http://ircstats.scenehd.org | Read http://scenehd.blogg.se'

[12:46] <SoWErA> is there still a few working routers to the site ?

[12:47] <tjj> a) Randy posted the link to blogg long before the site was taken down, it has also been there for a few years b) staff controls the rights to the domain, so only they could change A records which are now pointing to the redirector service c) the A record of the redirector is on the same network as the DNS servers for scenehd are

[12:47] <randy> tjj: Please post it on the blogs, seems like many are not trusting us

[12:48] <randy> blog*

[12:48] <SoWErA> well might wanna make it a little more clear then on the blogg since several commentaters think it's fake

[12:48] <tjj> i am already doing that :p

[12:48] <tjj> finishing up part-2

[12:48] <SoWErA> :)

[12:48] <randy> How can we prove its real?

[12:48] <tjj> i will try to in the pt2

[12:49] <SoWErA> "If you donated through PayPal during that time, you were scammed."

[12:49] <SoWErA> I did donate in June and I did receive my upload quota, so this information is absolutely wrong and suspicious.

[12:50] <tjj> to get the facts straight paypal donations were resurrected not so long ago, right?

[12:50] <tjj> it was in the news

[12:50] <randy> tjj: But we removed it asap

[12:51] <tjj> but before that, paypal was replaced with moneybookers (or smthg else dont quite remember)

[12:51] <tjj> yea, i remember a statement about issues with paypal

[12:51] <randy> but the thing Stefan is saying, is that we're broke because we have not asked for donations more than a couple of times this year

[12:51] <tjj> yes, i understand that

[12:51] <randy> there were also issues with moneybookers

[12:52] <SoWErA> what kind ;( ?

[12:52] <tjj> i'm not sure why it's so confusing for other commenteers, people can't get their time/dates straight

[12:52] <tjj> it's all very obvious if u track the timeline

[12:53] <tjj> randy: perhaps you should outline that in the main post, i mean the timeline for changing donation services, since otherwise it will only generate more unrelated spam

Also, just talked to randy and you will get more information soon! Just hang in there!

now, to answer some of the controversial/provocative/biased/offensive posts and to dismiss some of the bogus and fake pseudo-arguments. First, i would like to say - it makes me sad and disgusted to find out, that there were such selfish, egoistic, pigheaded and generally "not so bright" members in our community like "hmmm..." and "bubu", i guess this is the time when some people show their real face, pretty pathetic. Not only do they show their complete carelessness, arogance and stupidity, but they are also trying to make it an enjoyable thing for themselfs with pretentious and naive speculation. Trying to hit the 'presumed dead' lion, aren't we?

Also, Jorgen doesn't seem to understand the scale of the issue and seems to be proud of calling himself "A PIRATE" even though even everything pirate related needs to have financial support in order to survive. Being a pirate is to be only following a moral code for not shelling out a dime for copyright, the double standard of not paying for anything doesn't apply in real life - providing a fast/inexhaustible/comfortable hosting service at 3rd parties always costs money. You pay this cost one way or another - either through ads or through donations. Ofcourse, many people are able to just keep themselfs in the shade and let other people (that actually realize the value to things) take care of it and fulfill that essential part. If you are not capable of doing so financially - it is fine, but do not brag about in a proud form confusing the actual meanings. Ofcourse, once again, the analogy can be drawn with real life situations - would you just let good/quality/decent things, that are part of your interest, just disappear that easily, if you knew that you could actually do somethng to prevent it? It's a cliche example, but scenehd is currently undergoing about the same. When i joined scenehd, i was actually quite surprised, that it did NOT have a static/permanent donation service - it was quite hard to imagine, that the source that provides all these goods could 'hold through' more or less independently w/o constantly asking for donations to cover the hosting/traffic costs. ALL the bigfish trackers that i know are dependant on the donations from it's userbase, because, once again, it covers the hosting/traffic costs. Right at this moment, scenehd is standing in a 'tight spot' with an obligatory need to migrate to another network to be able to RESTORE the service and make its userbase happy. Basically, they have been making everyone HAPPY w/o actually getting help from the userbase for covering the above mentioned expenses for the recent year+. They seem to be doing anything they can for users just to satisfy them (i can not help but also mention the site devs which are very good-mannered and therefore will listen to what people have to say and make things happen in no time, in contrast to sitedev staff at other trackers that seem to be only following the TREND of stubbornness, arrogance and narcisism) and now is the exact time for the community to support scenehd and help out in any way they can - WHY some people are trying to refuse to do this by making up some ridicolous excuses is BEYOND ME.

Ok, now let's clear some things up:

The site is down - why? Because it was not reachable/operational for the vast majority of it's userbase and there was no other way (but IRC, but only a lower portion of users knows about/uses it) to reach them, but to setup a redirectional service which points to THIS blog. It is a fair decision, the only way you can reach everyone to comment on the situation. And ofcourse, it was a time for a change - many users, including the staff, got fed up with the incompetence/inability of the hoster/ISP of fixing/repairing the routing problem. Like i have already said - even members of the STAFF were 'cut off' from the site, so the current action is taken by only a few - you probably understand that is not usually easy to make vital decisions in a small pair, physically not easy to take care of so many things that follow. So, the reasonable decision here is to move to another hosting location - which scenehd is doing.

How can you be sure the information posted on this URL/IP is legit?

Let's look at a few deteails:

2010-10-03 @ 14:44:39
Posted by: x

a) scenehd.blogg.se has been around for atleast a few years and there were status updates being posted here regarding the site (most of the active community knows about it's existance - some, however, do not).

b) the actual DNS information for the scenehd.org domain has been changed, the domain now has a different 'A record' pointing to '98.124.198.1' (which in turn works as a redirector to this blog), which is the courtesy of 'DemandMedia AS'. This is a commercial service for domain registration/control. The only person, who can update those entries - is the domain/account holder. Someone has mentioned the possibility of it being hacked, oh please? All of a sudden with a great timing on the routing issues it gets "hacked" on parallel, right? Be serious, totally bogus.

c) let's look at the nameservers scenehd uses:

scenehd.org. 2459 IN NS dns1.name-services.com.

scenehd.org. 2459 IN NS dns3.name-services.com.

scenehd.org. 2459 IN NS dns5.name-services.com.

scenehd.org. 2459 IN NS dns4.name-services.com.

scenehd.org. 2459 IN NS dns2.name-services.com.

Now at the SOA record: dns1.name-services.com

IP of the SOA record: 98.124.192.1

What do we have?

98.124.198.1 [from b)]

98.124.192.1

http://www.robtex.com/ip/98.124.198.1.html

http://www.robtex.com/ip/98.124.192.1.html

and who owns these ranges?

http://www.robtex.com/as/as21740.html

AS21740 aka DemandMedia AS

----------------------------

So, as you can see, the information correlates, which means that this is no hack/impersonation/fake/whatever else.

d) the link to the this exact URL has been stuck in the topic of scenehd's official IRC network

e) let's now finally CLARIFY the situation with donations:

actually, it is surprising that people can't seem to remember the timeline of how things happened, namely that scenehd was not taking any donations the recent year - there was only a small time window (sometime during the summer) when you could donate via an alternative service to paypal (i don't quite remember whether it was moneybookers or some other thing starting from M), the indicator for the donations was visible in the upper right corner of the website and got full pretty fast (meaning it disappeared).

now, those of you who have a sense of 'time' should remember, that scenehd was having issues with paypal (there was an official news statement about this) and it got replaced by an alternative service. However, after the long, recently the paypal service has been restored/activated again and there was ALSO an official news statement about this. Really makes me wonder, what were people that missed this, actually doing? It was so hard to click the news tab?

To sum up, everything posted on this blog is legit/real/coming from the staff of scenehd/etc. I THINK IT IS PRETTY DAMN OBVIOUS NOW.

2010-10-03 @ 14:46:25
Posted by: Temp nick

Thanks x for the clarification. However, about the donations, it wasn't very wise to give misleading information to people who actually donated. If you tell me that you haven't been accepting money for a year when I personally donated twice in a week 3 months ago, it looks suspicious. If you tell me that if I used Paypal I've been scammed when I used Paypal and I actually got upload credits (so it couldn't have been a scam), it looks suspicious. And it will, as it has, create confusion. It's not that we don't remember the timeline, it's that this morning we received an information that was misleading.

I'll be donating what I can this afternoon, hope to see you back soon.

Hang on now, no donations in over a year? I donated a large sum the last time donations were open, and that was definitely within the last year. I did receive my upload quota, so this information is absolutely wrong and suspicious. I even receiced personal congratulations from staff, at the time. They even added an extra invite, that i asked for.

I really hope that scenehd, will continue to rock...
